Design Manager / Senior Project Architect – 2iC Leadership role – Melbourne and Geelong.

Our client is a nationwide provider of specialist design, construction and fit out solutions to a highly profitable market in Australia. They have a track record of successfully completing projects nationwide and continue to reinforce their position as a design and market leader in their field. They have a well-established architectural design team of nine currently creating fantastic commercial spaces for clients across Australia.

Due to a sustained increase in the number of projects as well as a strategic focus on improving leadership capacity for the long term, we have been exclusively engaged to recruit a creative and commercial Senior Architect to join the team in a leadership role to oversee the entire design process for clients. This is a full time, permanent role and there will be good opportunity for growth within the business by developing the company’s capabilities as it expands into new markets, as well as ensuring quality designs that are ready to be built by the construction team. There will also be hands on management of your own client projects delivering modern, creative designs for clients.

Specific duties will involve.

  • Manage and coordinate the design team output and projects. Working with the Design Director to ensure accuracy and quality of project designs and documentation for the internal construction team.
  • Deputise for the Design Director and take a leadership role with the team.
  • Manage your own clients and projects. Provide architectural designs for construction and fit-out projects across Australia. Manage projects across all stages from concept design to full documentation.
  • Using Revit.
  • Maintain and develop client relationships. Coordinate and attend client meetings. Present documentation packages for client review. Gain client trust and commitment to work with clients across multiple projects over time.
  • Liaise with external consultants, engineers and project managers. Prepare and submit detailed designs to local authorities.
  • Mentor junior team members, graduate architects and experienced architects.

The business is well-established and has excellent prospects for the future. They operate in a relatively recession-proof market, have grown from 1 to 9 architects over the last 10 years and are now embarking on a new period of expansion and diversification, opening up new market opportunities. Working closely with a committed and passionate management team, there is plenty of scope to genuinely add design flair to interesting projects.

This is a key senior role in the business and as such would most likely appeal to an architect with 10 years or more of quality architectural experience gained in Australia. The remuneration on offer will align with your experience but is expected to be in the region of $140K plus super and bonus.

To succeed in this role, you will need to demonstrate.

  • Degree or higher tertiary education in architecture.
  • 10+ years of quality architectural experience gained in Australia. Architectural experience for retail, commercial, office, education or healthcare projects will be crucial.
  • Proven ability to work with the builder on design and construct projects. Demonstrated capability to ensure projects are accurate and ready to be built.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced work environment and able to ensure individual and team output is of a high quality. Ensure, as volume of projects continues to grow, staff capabilities are developed to maintain quality.
  • Able to demonstrate design flair across projects.
  • Advanced skills and experience with Revit.
  • Sound understanding of relevant building codes and regulations in Australia.
  • Eligibility to work within Australia.

The role will operate between the Melbourne office close to Southern Cross station and the Geelong HQ. There will be also travel as required to client locations across Victoria/Australia. This is a long-term career role with the opportunity to develop your skills and over time take on more responsibility within the business.
